Subsequent tumors in childhood cancer survivors

Survivors of childhood cancer are at increased risk of late morbidities, including the development of subsequent tumors. More knowledge on risks of and risk factors for subsequent tumors is essential to predict which survivors are at highest and at lowest risk. This is important to guide follow-up recommendations and the development of new treatment protocols of children with cancer. As an epidemiologist, I coordinate various projects on subsequent tumors in childhood cancer survivors, which address clinically-relevant questions and gaps in knowledge. Currently, I am supervising several PhD students and research assistants on different projects:

  • Colorectal adenoma and cancer risk after treatment for pediatric cancers

  • Risk factors for female breast cancer after treatment for childhood cancer in an internationally pooled cohort

  • Risk and time trends of subsequent tumors after five decades of pediatric cancer treatment

  • Radiotherapy-related meningioma, cerebrovascular events, and cataract in childhood cancer survivors

  • Health problems after 3D-planned pediatric radiotherapy: A nation-wide cohort study
